WATTERS FAMILY
Alexander and Annie WATTERS had six sons, three of whom fought in World War 1. Their oldest son, and first born child, Allen, died as an infant. Their third son Alexander was killed in France in 1918, and his name is on the list of men who "died for their country" on the Brooklyn Memorial. His story is published on this website. Three other sons - Arthur, Allan and John - also fought in World War 1, all surviving and returning to New Zealand. Their names are also on the Brooklyn Memorial and their stories will eventually be posted to this website. The youngest son, Frederick, was only 19 by the time the war ended and did not serve.
There were also two daughters in the family.
Alexander Watters (father) was a brewer. The family lived in Kumara a small town about midway between Greymouth and Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand for some years before moving to Brooklyn, Wellington. Both Alexander and Annie are buried in Karori Cemetery, Wellington.
