FRANCIS NEIL McVICAR (Frank) is marked on the Newlands memorial as one of the local boys killed in WW1. His service record however indicates otherwise - he returned safely to New Zealand after nearly 3 years service from May 1916 until July 1919. This is surprising - Frank was born in January 1899, so would have been only 16 when he signed up, and still not 20 years old when finally discharged. His older brother, William, also served and was killed, so his story has been fully researched and is available here.
